Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Yerba buena (commonly referring to several species of aromatic mint, especially Mentha spp. or Satureja douglasii) has a long history of traditional use in folk medicine, especially throughout Latin America and the Philippines. In these traditions, yerba buena has been used to alleviate symptoms associated with the respiratory tract, including congestion, headaches, and sinus discomfort. This use is typically based on its aromatic and mild anti-inflammatory properties, which may help open nasal passages and provide temporary relief from sinus pressure when used as a tea, steam inhalation, or topical application.

However, scientific validation specifically for sinus support is limited. While mints in general contain menthol, which can provide a sensation of improved airflow, most clinical studies focus on peppermint (Mentha piperita) or menthol itself, not yerba buena per se. The evidence for yerba buena’s effectiveness in relieving sinus issues is therefore primarily anecdotal and rooted in ethnobotanical tradition rather than supported by rigorous clinical trials. Thus, its use for sinus support is best described as traditional, and the supporting evidence is modest (rated 2 out of 5), mainly because of the lack of direct research on yerba buena’s specific effects on the sinuses.
