Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Zhejiang fritillary (Fritillaria thunbergii), known in Chinese as "Zhe Bei Mu," has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to support respiratory health, including the sinuses. In TCM, it is believed to "clear heat," "transform phlegm," and "relieve cough," making it a common ingredient in formulas for sinus congestion, phlegmy coughs, and related conditions. Historical materia medica texts and modern TCM clinical practice both reference its use for these purposes. However, scientific validation of its efficacy for sinus support is limited. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that fritillary alkaloids possess expectorant, anti-inflammatory, and antitussive properties, which could, in theory, be relevant for sinus health. Yet, direct clinical trials in humans specifically addressing sinus conditions are lacking, and most available research focuses on cough and general respiratory symptoms rather than sinus inflammation or congestion. As such, its use to support the sinuses is justified primarily by tradition rather than by definitive scientific evidence.
