Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Achyranthes, particularly Achyranthes aspera, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In these systems, it is reputed to support bone health and is used for conditions related to the skeletal system, such as joint pain, bone fractures, and arthritis. Traditional Ayurvedic texts mention Achyranthes as a "Rasayana" (rejuvenative) herb that is thought to strengthen bones and help in the healing of fractures. Some folk practices use it as an adjunct in poultices or internal remedies for bone-related ailments.

However, the scientific evidence supporting these uses is limited and mainly preclinical. A few animal studies have suggested that extracts of Achyranthes aspera may have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, which could provide symptomatic relief in bone and joint disorders. Some rodent studies have indicated a potential for enhancing fracture healing, but these are preliminary and have not been followed up with robust clinical trials in humans. There is a lack of well-designed human studies to confirm these effects or to elucidate the mechanisms by which Achyranthes might support bone health. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition, scientific validation remains weak.
