Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Antler horn, often referred to as "deer antler velvet," has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other East Asian medical systems. Traditionally, it is believed to "nourish the kidney," "strengthen yang," and help with bone and joint health, including supporting the skeletal system and promoting growth and healing after injuries. These claims are grounded in centuries of anecdotal use and are recorded in classical TCM texts. The rationale is that antler velvet, as a rapidly growing tissue, contains factors that might support growth and regeneration in humans. However, scientific validation for these specific skeletal benefits is limited. Some contemporary studies have identified that deer antler velvet contains growth factors such as IGF-1, and various minerals, but clinical trials in humans are sparse, of low quality, or inconclusive regarding its effectiveness in supporting bone density or healing. Reviews generally state that while animal studies suggest potential effects on bone metabolism, robust human evidence is lacking. Thus, its use for skeletal health is justified primarily by tradition rather than strong scientific validation.
