Boswellia, also known as Indian frankincense, has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for supporting joint health and relieving symptoms of inflammatory conditions. Modern scientific research has focused primarily on Boswellia's anti-inflammatory properties, particularly due to its active constituents called boswellic acids. Several clinical studies have investigated Boswellia extracts in the management of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, both of which involve inflammation and degradation of joint structures within the skeletal system. Results indicate that Boswellia may reduce pain, improve physical function, and decrease markers of inflammation, likely by inhibiting 5-lipoxygenase and reducing leukotriene synthesis.
While most research addresses the management of joint symptoms rather than direct effects on bone density or bone structure, the improvement in joint health and reduction in inflammation indirectly supports skeletal system function. There is, however, limited direct scientific evidence that Boswellia enhances bone mineral density or heals bone injuries. Its primary benefit for the skeletal system appears to be the reduction of inflammation associated with joint and bone disorders. Therefore, Boswellia is scientifically validated for supporting aspects of the skeletal system, mainly through joint health and inflammation control, but not as a bone-building or bone-healing agent.
