Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chinese Dodder (Cuscuta chinensis), known as Tu Si Zi in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for supporting the skeletal system, particularly for strengthening bones and tendons. In TCM, Chinese Dodder seeds are traditionally believed to "tonify the kidneys and liver," which are considered essential organs for healthy bones and joints according to TCM theory. The herb is often prescribed in formulas aimed at treating conditions such as osteoporosis, lower back pain, and weak knees, which are interpreted as signs of kidney deficiency. However, while animal studies and limited in vitro research have suggested that extracts of Cuscuta chinensis may promote osteoblast (bone-forming cell) activity and inhibit bone resorption, robust clinical evidence in humans remains lacking. Most available research is preliminary, and there are no large-scale, well-controlled trials directly linking Chinese Dodder supplementation to significant improvements in bone density or fracture risk in humans. Therefore, the use of Chinese Dodder to support the skeletal system is primarily justified by traditional use in TCM rather than strong scientific validation. Its inclusion in bone health formulas persists mainly because of its established role in herbal medicine traditions, not because of conclusive modern clinical evidence.
