Rating (out of 5): 3

Collagen is the main structural protein in bones, making up about 90% of the organic matrix of bone tissue. Its supplementation has a traditional basis in supporting joint and skin health, but more recent scientific research has begun to investigate its role in bone health specifically. Several studies have shown that oral collagen supplementation can have a positive effect on bone metabolism. For example, randomized controlled trials have demonstrated that collagen peptides may help to increase bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women, a group at high risk for osteoporosis. The proposed mechanism involves collagen peptides stimulating osteoblast activity (cells responsible for bone formation) and possibly increasing the synthesis of other bone matrix components.

However, while there is growing evidence supporting a beneficial effect, the overall quality and quantity of studies remain moderate. Most studies are relatively small and short in duration. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses suggest a modest effect, but call for more large-scale, long-term research. Collagen is not a replacement for established osteoporosis treatments but may be a supportive strategy for bone health, especially when combined with adequate calcium, vitamin D, and physical activity. In summary, collagen supplementation has a scientific basis for supporting the skeletal system, but the evidence is not as robust as for some other interventions.
