Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Dioscorea nipponica, commonly known as Japanese yam, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). In TCM, Dioscorea species are often used for their purported benefits to the kidneys, which, according to traditional beliefs, are linked to bone health and skeletal strength. The root has been employed in herbal formulas intended to address joint pain, rheumatic conditions, and general debility, which sometimes extend to bone and skeletal system support. However, the direct scientific evidence supporting Dioscorea nipponica's use for the skeletal system is limited. While some studies have identified compounds such as diosgenin with anti-inflammatory and potential anti-osteoporotic effects, these findings are preliminary and mostly derived from in vitro or animal studies. There are few, if any, robust clinical trials that directly assess its efficacy for bone health in humans. Therefore, its use for supporting the skeletal system is based primarily on traditional use rather than established scientific validation.
