Evidence supporting the use of: Dipsacus
For the body system: Skeletal System (Bones)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Dipsacus species, particularly Dipsacus asper and Dipsacus fullonum (commonly called teasel), have a history of traditional use in Chinese herbal medicine for supporting the skeletal system, especially bone health and healing. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Dipsacus (known as Xu Duan) is classified as a herb that "tonifies the liver and kidneys" and "strengthens bones and sinews." It has historically been used to aid in the recovery from bone fractures, promote bone healing, and address conditions like lower back pain or weakness associated with kidney deficiency.
Scientific studies on Dipsacus are limited, but some preliminary in vitro and animal research suggests potential bone-strengthening properties. For example, extracts of Dipsacus asper have demonstrated the ability to stimulate osteoblast (bone-forming cell) proliferation and differentiation in cell cultures, and animal studies have reported increased bone mineral density and improved fracture healing. The proposed mechanisms often involve modulation of bone metabolism and anti-inflammatory effects. However, these findings are not yet validated by robust clinical trials in humans.
Overall, while the traditional use of Dipsacus for bone health is well documented, scientific validation is currently limited to early-stage research, and there is insufficient clinical evidence to definitively support its efficacy for skeletal system support in humans.
