Evidence supporting the use of: Estrogen
For the body system: Skeletal System (Bones)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5
Estrogen plays a crucial role in maintaining bone health, and its use to support the skeletal system is strongly supported by scientific evidence. Estrogen helps regulate bone remodeling by inhibiting bone resorption (breakdown) and promoting bone formation. In premenopausal women, normal estrogen levels help maintain bone density. After menopause, estrogen levels drop significantly, leading to increased bone resorption and a higher risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) or hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can prevent bone loss and reduce fracture risk in postmenopausal women. The Women’s Health Initiative and other large-scale trials have shown that estrogen therapy increases bone mineral density and decreases the incidence of vertebral and hip fractures.
However, the use of estrogen therapy must be balanced with potential risks, such as increased risk of breast cancer, blood clots, and stroke. As a result, current guidelines recommend using the lowest effective dose of estrogen for the shortest necessary duration, primarily for women at significant risk of osteoporosis who cannot use other treatments. In summary, the scientific consensus is robust: estrogen has a well-documented, physiologically essential role in supporting skeletal health, especially in the context of menopause-associated bone loss.
