Evidence supporting the use of: Fish protein
For the body system: Skeletal System (Bones)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Fish protein is increasingly recognized for its potential benefits to the skeletal system, primarily due to its rich content of essential amino acids, bioactive peptides, and minerals such as calcium and phosphorus. Scientific studies, particularly those involving fish-derived collagen peptides, have demonstrated that these compounds can stimulate osteoblast (bone-forming cell) activity and inhibit osteoclast (bone-resorbing cell) activity, leading to improved bone metabolism and density. For example, several animal studies and a few small human clinical trials have shown that fish collagen supplementation can enhance bone mineral density and support bone healing, especially in populations at risk for osteoporosis. Fish protein hydrolysates may also provide a source of easily digestible protein that supports overall musculoskeletal health. However, the evidence is not yet robust or widespread; large-scale, long-term human trials are limited, and most research has focused on collagen peptides rather than whole fish protein. Thus, while there is a scientific basis for the use of fish-derived proteins and peptides in supporting bone health, the strength of evidence is moderate and emerging rather than conclusive.
