Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Magnesium carbonate is commonly used as a dietary supplement to provide magnesium, an essential mineral that plays a significant role in bone health. Scientific evidence supports the role of magnesium in maintaining skeletal integrity. Magnesium is a cofactor for enzymes involved in bone formation, and it helps regulate calcium metabolism, which is critical for bone mineralization. Epidemiological studies have shown that higher dietary magnesium intake is associated with greater bone mineral density and a reduced risk of osteoporosis, particularly in older adults. Magnesium deficiency, conversely, is linked with lower bone mass and increased bone fragility. However, most of the evidence relates to magnesium in general rather than specifically to magnesium carbonate. Magnesium carbonate itself is a bioavailable form that, upon ingestion, is converted to magnesium chloride in the stomach, allowing for absorption. While studies on magnesium carbonate specifically are limited, its use as a magnesium supplement is well-established. Thus, while not the most direct intervention for bone health (like calcium or vitamin D), there is moderate scientific support for magnesium (including magnesium carbonate) in supporting the skeletal system through its role in bone metabolism and maintenance.
