Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sesame seeds have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, where they are believed to support bone health and overall vitality. This traditional use is likely due to their rich content of minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, all of which are important for maintaining healthy bones. In Ayurveda, sesame oil is also used for massage and as a dietary supplement to strengthen bones and joints.

However, scientific evidence directly linking sesame consumption to improved bone health in humans is limited. While sesame seeds are indeed a good source of calcium and other minerals, the bioavailability of calcium from plant sources can be lower than from dairy products due to the presence of oxalates and phytates, which can inhibit mineral absorption. Some animal studies have suggested that sesame extract may have protective effects on bone density, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Thus, while the traditional rationale for using sesame to support the skeletal system is clear, scientific validation remains modest and largely inferential based on its nutrient content rather than direct clinical evidence.
