Shilajit has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine, where it is reputed to support bone health and the skeletal system. Ancient Ayurvedic texts describe Shilajit as a "rasayana," or rejuvenating substance, believed to promote strength, vitality, and support tissue regeneration, including that of bones. The rationale in traditional systems often relates to Shilajit’s high mineral content, particularly fulvic acid and trace elements, which are thought to nourish the body and potentially benefit the bones. However, when it comes to modern scientific evidence, there are only a few preliminary studies — largely in animal models — suggesting that Shilajit may influence bone health, often by modulating oxidative stress or inflammation, or by affecting mineral metabolism. Human clinical data specifically investigating Shilajit for bone health or skeletal support is lacking. As such, the primary justification for using Shilajit for skeletal support remains rooted in traditional use, not robust scientific validation. Therefore, while it is traditionally used for this purpose, the strength of evidence is modest, and high-quality human studies are needed to substantiate these claims.
