Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Spatholobus, particularly Spatholobus suberectus (commonly known as "Ji Xue Teng" in Traditional Chinese Medicine), has a long history of use in supporting musculoskeletal health. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Spatholobus is often prescribed to "invigorate the blood," "dispel stasis," and "relax the tendons." It is commonly used in formulas intended for the management of joint pain, muscle stiffness, and bone or tendon injuries. The herb is believed to support circulation, which traditional practitioners associate with improved healing and nourishment of bones and joints. However, these uses are grounded primarily in traditional theory rather than modern scientific validation.
Modern scientific research on Spatholobus has focused mostly on its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potential anticancer properties, rather than direct effects on bone metabolism or bone density. Some preliminary animal and in vitro studies suggest that extracts from Spatholobus suberectus may have a positive effect on osteoblast (bone-forming cell) function or may inhibit osteoclast (bone-resorbing cell) activity, but this evidence is limited and not robust enough to warrant a higher evidence score. There are no large-scale human clinical trials directly supporting the use of Spatholobus for bone health. Thus, its application in supporting the skeletal system remains primarily justified by traditional use, with only weak and indirect scientific support.
