Sanicle (Sanicula europaea) has a long history of traditional use in European herbal medicine, particularly for supporting skin health. Folk practitioners utilized sanicle as a remedy for wounds, ulcers, and skin inflammations, often applying poultices or topical preparations made from the leaves or aerial parts of the plant. Historical herbals, such as those by Nicholas Culpeper and John Gerard, describe sanicle as being effective in “healing green wounds” and promoting the closure of sores. These uses are echoed in various ethnobotanical sources, which cite the plant’s purported astringent and vulnerary (wound-healing) properties.
Despite its rich traditional use, there is a lack of robust modern scientific studies validating sanicle’s efficacy or elucidating its potential mechanisms for supporting skin health.
