Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

3,3'-Dihydroxy-β-carotene-4,4'-dione is also known as astaxanthin, a naturally occurring carotenoid pigment found in microalgae, yeast, salmon, trout, krill, shrimp, and crayfish. Astaxanthin has gained attention in dermatological and cosmetic fields primarily due to its potent antioxidant properties. Several scientific studies have evaluated astaxanthin's effects on skin health, including its potential to protect against UV-induced damage, improve skin elasticity, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and support overall skin moisture.

Randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials in humans have shown that oral supplementation with astaxanthin (typically 4–12 mg/day) for periods of 4–12 weeks can lead to measurable improvements in skin parameters such as moisture retention, elasticity, and wrinkle reduction. There is also in vitro and animal evidence suggesting that astaxanthin can inhibit oxidative stress and inflammation in skin cells, both of which are implicated in the aging process and photodamage. However, while the evidence is promising, the number of robust, large-scale clinical trials in diverse populations is still limited, and the optimal dosage and long-term effects are not yet fully established. Thus, the evidence base is moderate but growing, justifying a rating of 3 on the scale.
