Evidence supporting the use of: Abalone
For the health condition: Skin Care (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Abalone, particularly its shell, has been used in traditional medicine and skincare, especially in East Asian cultures. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), abalone shell (called "Shi Jue Ming") is valued for its supposed cooling and calming properties, which are believed to help with various skin conditions such as dryness, redness, or irritation. The shell is sometimes ground into powder and incorporated into topical preparations or taken orally. However, the use of abalone or its shell in skin care lacks robust scientific validation. There are no high-quality clinical trials or scientific studies demonstrating the efficacy of abalone or abalone shell in improving skin health or treating specific skin conditions. Most of the evidence supporting its use is anecdotal or based on traditional practices rather than controlled research. In modern cosmetic products, abalone extract is sometimes included for its mineral content or as a marketing ingredient, but again, scientific evidence for its effectiveness in skin care is minimal. Therefore, the use of abalone in skin care is primarily supported by tradition, with very limited scientific backing.
