Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Almonds have been traditionally used in skin care across various cultures, particularly in Ayurvedic and Unani medicine. Almond oil, derived from the kernels of sweet almonds (Prunus amygdalus dulcis), has long been applied topically to moisturize skin, soothe dryness, and improve complexion. The emollient properties of almond oil are attributed to its high content of fatty acids, particularly oleic and linoleic acids, which help to soften and smooth the skin. Historically, almond preparations have also been used to relieve skin irritation and mild inflammatory conditions.

While there is limited high-quality clinical research directly assessing the skin benefits of almond products, some small studies and reviews suggest potential moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effects when almond oil is used topically. However, the evidence is not robust, and most support comes from historical and traditional use rather than modern scientific validation. Almond oil is generally considered safe for topical use in individuals without nut allergies. Due to the predominance of tradition in its use for general skin care, the evidence rating is moderate (2/5).
