Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bird's nest, particularly Edible Bird's Nest (EBN) from swiftlets, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for promoting general health and enhancing skin complexion. Traditionally, it is believed to improve skin texture, elasticity, and promote a youthful appearance, which has led to its incorporation in various beauty products and supplements in East Asia. The traditional rationale is that the high glycoprotein and sialic acid content of bird's nest nourishes the body and supports skin health.

Scientific studies on bird’s nest for skin care are limited and primarily preclinical. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that EBN extracts may have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and could promote collagen production, which are beneficial for skin health. However, robust clinical evidence in humans is lacking. Most claims are based on traditional usage rather than high-quality clinical trials. Thus, its use for general skin care is chiefly justified by cultural tradition, with only preliminary scientific indications supporting its efficacy.
