Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Butterfly Pea (Clitoria ternatea) has been traditionally used in Southeast Asian and Ayurvedic medicine for its purported skin benefits, including promoting a healthy complexion and treating minor skin irritations. Traditional uses often involve topical applications of Butterfly Pea extracts or pastes to soothe the skin, reduce inflammation, and accelerate wound healing. The vivid blue color of the flower is due to anthocyanins, which are known antioxidants; this has led to traditional beliefs about its protective effects against skin aging and damage.

Scientific research on Butterfly Pea’s effects specifically for skin care in humans is limited. Some in vitro studies suggest that extracts of the flower possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and animal studies indicate potential for wound healing and UV protection. However, clinical trials in human subjects directly evaluating Butterfly Pea for general skin care are lacking. The use of the plant in skincare products is currently based more on its antioxidant content and traditional reputation rather than strong scientific validation. Therefore, while there is a history of traditional use and some supporting laboratory research, robust scientific evidence for its effectiveness in general skin care is still developing.
