Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Cholesterol is scientifically validated as a valuable ingredient in skin care, particularly for maintaining and repairing the skin barrier. The outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum, is composed primarily of ceramides, free fatty acids, and cholesterol in a specific ratio. Cholesterol helps preserve the structural integrity and function of the skin barrier, preventing moisture loss and protecting against environmental damage. Clinical and laboratory studies demonstrate that topical application of cholesterol, especially when combined with ceramides and fatty acids, improves skin hydration, reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and accelerates barrier recovery in compromised skin conditions such as eczema, atopic dermatitis, and dry skin. Cholesterol-containing formulations are often recommended for mature or damaged skin, as the natural production of cholesterol in the skin decreases with age, contributing to dryness and impaired barrier function. While there is robust evidence supporting its role in barrier repair and general skin care, cholesterol is not a “miracle” ingredient for all skin problems, but its physiological relevance and positive clinical outcomes make its use in general skin care both scientifically justified and effective.
