Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Lanolin is a natural, waxy substance derived from the wool of sheep and is widely used in skin care products for its emollient and moisturizing properties. Scientific evidence supports its effectiveness in treating dry, rough, or scaly skin, as well as in soothing minor skin irritations. Lanolin acts as an occlusive agent, forming a semi-occlusive barrier on the skin that reduces trans-epidermal water loss, thereby helping the skin retain moisture. Numerous studies and dermatological reviews have affirmed lanolin’s ability to improve skin hydration in both healthy individuals and those with skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. In addition, lanolin is commonly recommended for use on sensitive areas such as the lips and nipples (e.g., in breastfeeding mothers) due to its low allergenic potential for most users and its efficacy in preventing and treating chapped or cracked skin. While allergic reactions can occur in a minority of individuals, overall, the use of lanolin in skin care is supported by a substantial body of scientific literature and clinical experience, making it a validated ingredient for general skin care purposes.
