Rating (out of 5): 2

Mesua, commonly known as Mesua ferrea or Nagkesar, has a long-standing history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and other South Asian medicinal systems for skin care. Traditional texts and ethnobotanical reports cite the use of its flowers, seeds, and oil for managing skin ailments such as wounds, inflammation, itching, and various skin diseases. Mesua oil and preparations featuring its extracts are used topically for their purported anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial benefits, aiding in wound healing and soothing irritated skin.

While these traditional applications are well-documented, scientific validation remains limited. Some laboratory studies suggest that Mesua ferrea possesses antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties, which could be beneficial for skin health. However, these studies are mostly in vitro or on animal models, and robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while there is a strong traditional basis for Mesua’s use in general skin care, the scientific evidence to confirm its efficacy and safety in this context is still emerging and not yet definitive.
