Evidence supporting the use of: Orchid
For the health condition: Skin Care (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Orchid extracts have been used traditionally in various cultures for skin care, particularly in East and Southeast Asia. In traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurveda, orchids are valued for their purported moisturizing, soothing, and anti-aging properties. Cosmetic companies in Korea and Japan have incorporated orchid extracts (such as those from Dendrobium or Orchis mascula) into skin care products, often citing their rich content of phenolic compounds, minerals, and mucilaginous polysaccharides that are believed to support skin hydration and elasticity. However, scientific studies directly evaluating the efficacy of orchid extracts for skin health are limited and mostly preliminary. Some in vitro studies suggest antioxidant and mild anti-inflammatory properties, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Thus, while orchid’s use in skin care is rooted in tradition and supported by a handful of laboratory studies, there is limited high-quality scientific validation to date. Its continued presence in skin care products is largely based on historical precedent and anecdotal benefits rather than strong clinical evidence.
