Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Pointed gourd (Trichosanthes dioica) has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and other South Asian folk practices. It is believed to have cooling and detoxifying properties, and as such, has been used to support general skin health and manage minor skin issues. However, direct references to its topical use or consumption specifically for skin care are sparse in the classical Ayurvedic literature. Most of its traditional use for skin comes from its application as a general blood purifier or from its anti-inflammatory properties, which are thought to indirectly benefit the skin. Scientific studies validating these claims are very limited or lacking. While some research highlights the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of pointed gourd extracts, these studies are preliminary and do not directly link the use of pointed gourd to improved skin health in humans. Therefore, the use of pointed gourd for skin care is primarily justified by traditional beliefs, with minimal scientific evidence to support its efficacy for this purpose.
