Evidence supporting the use of: Polypodium leucotomos
For the health condition: Skin Care (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Polypodium leucotomos, a tropical fern native to Central and South America, is used in skin care primarily for its photoprotective and antioxidant properties. Scientific studiesāmostly small clinical trials and in vitro researchāhave investigated its oral extract (often marketed as FernblockĀ®) for its ability to protect the skin against ultraviolet (UV) radiation damage. The extract contains polyphenols, including caffeic and ferulic acid, which are believed to mitigate oxidative stress and inflammation induced by UV exposure.
Several human trials demonstrate that oral supplementation with Polypodium leucotomos extract can increase the minimal erythema dose (the amount of UV radiation required to cause redness), suggesting enhanced resistance to sunburn. Some studies also report reduced formation of sunburn cells, DNA damage, and suppression of UV-induced immunosuppression. Additionally, preliminary evidence supports its use in managing certain skin conditions aggravated by UV exposure, such as melasma, vitiligo, and polymorphic light eruption. However, most studies are modest in size and duration, and there is a need for larger, long-term trials to fully establish its efficacy and safety.
In summary, the use of Polypodium leucotomos in general skin care, especially for photoprotection, is supported by a moderate level of scientific evidence. While promising, more robust and extensive research is needed to confirm its benefits and optimal use.
