Evidence supporting the use of: Rose Hip
For the health condition: Skin Care (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Rose hip, derived from the fruit of the wild rose plant (Rosa canina and related species), has a long history in traditional medicine for skin care. However, in recent years, scientific studies have begun to examine its efficacy more closely. Rose hip is rich in vitamin C, carotenoids, polyphenols, and essential fatty acids, all of which are thought to contribute to skin health. Several small clinical studies and in vitro research suggest that topical and oral rose hip preparations may improve skin hydration, elasticity, and the appearance of wrinkles. For example, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study (N=34) found that oral rose hip powder significantly improved skin elasticity and moisture while reducing wrinkle depth over eight weeks. Other studies have indicated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, which may protect the skin from free radical damage and support wound healing. However, the quality and scale of available studies are limited, and more rigorous trials are needed to confirm these benefits. Overall, while traditional use is strong, there is a moderate and growing base of scientific evidence for rose hip’s role in general skin care, especially related to moisturizing, anti-aging, and antioxidant effects.
