Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rose, particularly in the form of rose water and rose oil, has been traditionally used for centuries in various cultures for skin care. Historical records from Persian, Indian, and European traditions describe rose preparations as soothing, moisturizing, and helpful for improving complexion. Rose water is commonly used as a facial toner, believed to reduce redness and calm skin irritation. The petals and oil are also components in traditional ointments and creams. While there is a strong tradition of use, scientific studies supporting these claims are relatively limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that rose extracts have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties, which could be beneficial for the skin. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional knowledge. Thus, the use of rose for general skin care is primarily justified by historical and cultural practices rather than strong scientific validation.
