Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Rugose Rose (Rosa rugosa), also known as Japanese rose, has a longstanding history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly in Chinese and Korean herbal practices. Its petals and hips have been used topically and orally for various skin ailments, including minor wounds, inflammation, and general skin care. The traditional rationale for its use centers on its purported ability to soothe the skin, promote healing, and provide antioxidant effects due to its high vitamin C content in the hips and polyphenols in the petals.

However, while traditional texts and folk medicine recognize Rugose Rose as beneficial for skin health, there is a scarcity of modern scientific studies specifically validating these applications. Limited laboratory research suggests some antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in related species and extracts, but robust clinical trials on Rugose Rose itself for general skin care are lacking. Thus, while its use is justified by tradition and there is a plausible biochemical basis, the evidence remains modest and primarily anecdotal rather than scientifically rigorous.
