Evidence supporting the use of: Silica
For the health condition: Skin Care (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Silica, a compound composed of silicon and oxygen, has been investigated for its role in skin health, particularly in maintaining skin strength and elasticity. Silicon is an essential trace element in the human body, and it is found in connective tissue, including the skin. Some scientific studies suggest that silicon supplementation (often in the form of orthosilicic acid, a bioavailable form of silica) may improve skin properties, such as elasticity and texture, and may support the synthesis of collagen, a critical protein for youthful skin appearance.
Nonetheless, the evidence is limited and mostly consists of small-scale clinical trials or in vitro studies. For example, a few randomized controlled trials have reported modest improvements in skin roughness and brittleness after supplementation with bioavailable silica, but these studies often have small sample sizes and short durations. Larger, high-quality clinical studies are lacking, and the mechanisms by which silica may improve skin health are not fully elucidated. In summary, while there is some early scientific evidence supporting the use of silica for general skin care, the data are not robust, and more research is needed to firmly establish its efficacy.
