Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Silicon yeast is a supplement in which silicon (often as orthosilicic acid) is incorporated into yeast cells, making it more bioavailable. Silicon itself is an essential trace mineral in humans and has been implicated in skin health, particularly in the synthesis and stabilization of collagen and glycosaminoglycans, which are integral to skin structure and elasticity. Scientific studies have shown that increased silicon intake can improve skin surface characteristics, such as thickness and elasticity, especially in women with photodamaged skin. However, most of these studies have been conducted with various forms of bioavailable silicon, not exclusively silicon yeast. A few clinical trials have assessed the effects of silicon-containing supplements (including those with yeast-derived silicon) and found modest improvements in skin hydration, elasticity, and reduction in wrinkle depth. Despite these findings, the evidence base remains limited in scope and sample size, and there is a lack of large-scale, high-quality randomized controlled trials specifically examining silicon yeast. Therefore, while there is a plausible biochemical rationale and some preliminary evidence to support the use of silicon yeast for general skin care, the overall level of scientific evidence is moderate to low at this time.
