Evidence supporting the use of: Verbascoside
For the health condition: Skin Care (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Verbascoside is a phenylethanoid glycoside found in various medicinal plants, including Verbascum and Plantago species. Its use in skin care is justified by increasing scientific evidence, particularly due to its potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. Several in vitro studies have demonstrated that verbascoside can scavenge free radicals, reduce lipid peroxidation, and protect keratinocytes from oxidative stress, all beneficial for maintaining healthy skin and combating signs of aging. Additionally, research has shown that verbascoside can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-α and IL-6), suggesting a role in soothing irritated or inflamed skin and supporting recovery from minor skin damage.
There are also studies indicating that verbascoside may accelerate wound healing and protect against UV-induced skin damage, further supporting its inclusion in topical formulations for general skin care. However, most of the research to date is preclinical (in vitro or animal models), with limited data from robust human clinical trials. As such, while the current scientific evidence is promising and has led to its inclusion in some cosmeceutical products, more high-quality clinical research is needed to fully validate its efficacy and safety for routine skin care in humans.
