Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA) is an essential omega-3 fatty acid found in plant sources such as flaxseed, chia seeds, and walnuts. Its role in supporting skin health, particularly in cases of dry and/or flaky skin, has some scientific backing. ALA is a key component of cell membranes and contributes to the maintenance of the skin's barrier function. Several studies have indicated that dietary supplementation with ALA or ALA-rich oils (such as flaxseed oil) can improve skin hydration, decrease transepidermal water loss, and reduce skin roughness. For example, a randomized controlled trial in women found that flaxseed oil supplementation significantly improved skin hydration and reduced skin sensitivity and roughness compared to placebo. Mechanistically, ALA and its metabolites help to modulate inflammatory pathways and promote the production of anti-inflammatory mediators, which may further benefit skin health.

However, while these findings are promising, the overall quality and quantity of clinical evidence is moderate, and most studies are small and focused on dietary intake rather than topical application. There is also variability in individual responses, and benefits may be more pronounced in those with deficient dietary omega-3 intake. Therefore, while scientific evidence exists to support the use of ALA for dry or flaky skin, further large-scale, well-designed clinical trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and optimal use.
