Evidence supporting the use of: Cape Aloe
For the health condition: Skin (dry and/or flaky)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cape Aloe (Aloe ferox) has a long history of traditional use for skin conditions, including dry and flaky skin. Traditionally, the gel extracted from the leaves of Cape Aloe has been applied topically to soothe, moisturize, and promote the healing of dry, irritated, or inflamed skin. Indigenous peoples of Southern Africa have used Aloe ferox preparations for generations as a folk remedy to treat various dermal ailments, relying on its perceived emollient and soothing properties.
Scientific research on Aloe ferox specifically is limited, but studies on Aloe vera (a related species) have demonstrated moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effects, which are sometimes extrapolated to Aloe ferox due to the presence of similar polysaccharides and phytochemicals in both species. However, direct clinical trials or robust scientific investigations focusing on Cape Aloe’s efficacy for treating dry or flaky skin are sparse.
Overall, while there is strong traditional support for using Cape Aloe in the management of dry skin, scientific validation is limited. Most of the evidence remains anecdotal or based on historical usage, with limited peer-reviewed data to confirm its effectiveness for this specific indication.
