Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Cocoa butter is widely used to support and treat dry and/or flaky skin, and its use is supported by both traditional practices and scientific evidence. Cocoa butter is a natural fat extracted from cocoa beans and is known for its high content of fatty acids, particularly stearic, palmitic, and oleic acids. These fatty acids are effective emollients, meaning they help to soften and smooth the skin by forming a protective barrier that reduces water loss and improves skin hydration. Scientific studies have shown that cocoa butter can improve skin moisture and barrier function, although its efficacy may be similar to other occlusive agents and emollients like petrolatum or shea butter. While cocoa butter is not a cure for underlying dermatological conditions, its inclusion in moisturizers and topical formulations is justified by its ability to maintain skin hydration and improve symptoms of dryness and flakiness. In addition, it is generally well tolerated and rarely causes irritation or allergic reactions. However, there is limited evidence to support claims that cocoa butter can treat scars or stretch marks, and its primary benefit remains in moisturizing and protecting dry skin. The evidence base, while moderate, is sufficient for its continued use for this purpose in over-the-counter skin care products.
