Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cod liver oil has a long history of use in managing dry and flaky skin, with its application rooted in both traditional remedies and some scientific evidence. Cod liver oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) and vitamins A and D, all of which are known to play roles in skin health. Omega-3 fatty acids help maintain the integrity of the skin barrier, reduce transepidermal water loss, and exert anti-inflammatory effects. Deficiency of vitamin A is historically associated with xerosis (dry, rough skin) and hyperkeratosis, and supplementation can help improve these symptoms in deficient individuals. Several small clinical studies and case reports have indicated that oral intake of cod liver oil or omega-3 supplements can modestly improve skin hydration and reduce symptoms of dermatitis, though these findings are not robust or broadly generalizable. There is less evidence for the efficacy of topical cod liver oil for dry skin, though it is sometimes used in wound healing and as an emollient in traditional medicine. Large-scale, high-quality clinical trials directly linking cod liver oil supplementation to improved dry or flaky skin in the general population are lacking. Therefore, while there is some biological plausibility and limited clinical support, the evidence is not strong or conclusive.
