Evidence supporting the use of: Glyceryl oleate
For the health condition: Skin (dry and/or flaky)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Glyceryl oleate is a monoester derived from glycerin and oleic acid, and is commonly used in cosmetic and skincare formulations. There is moderate scientific evidence supporting its use for dry and/or flaky skin. Glyceryl oleate acts primarily as an emollient and skin conditioning agent, helping to soften and smooth the skin by forming a protective barrier on its surface. This barrier reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL), thereby helping to maintain skin hydration. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that emollients like glyceryl oleate can improve skin barrier function, increase moisture retention, and reduce symptoms of dryness and flakiness.
Additionally, glyceryl oleate is a naturally occurring component of human skin lipids, particularly within the stratum corneum, where it contributes to the skin’s natural barrier properties. Its inclusion in mild cleansing products, such as baby washes and shampoos, is supported by evidence that it can replenish lipids lost during washing, helping to prevent post-cleansing dryness. While there is a lack of large, high-quality clinical trials specifically on glyceryl oleate alone, its mechanism of action and effects are well-understood within the context of emollient science. For these reasons, its use in treating and supporting dry and/or flaky skin is considered scientifically justified, though not at the highest level of clinical evidence.
