Lanolin is a natural, waxy substance derived from the sebaceous glands of sheep, widely used as an emollient in dermatology and skincare. Its use for dry and/or flaky skin is supported by scientific evidence. Lanolin acts as an effective moisturizer due to its occlusive properties, which help to reduce trans-epidermal water loss by forming a protective barrier on the skin. Several studies have demonstrated its efficacy in improving skin hydration and barrier function. For example, a review published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology highlights lanolin’s ability to enhance skin softness and elasticity, and it is commonly recommended to treat xerosis (dry skin) and to protect and repair the skin barrier in conditions such as eczema and dermatitis. In addition, lanolin is often used in nipple creams for breastfeeding mothers and in formulations for chapped lips, further supporting its role in managing compromised skin. While some individuals may experience allergic reactions or sensitivity, in the general population, lanolin is considered safe and effective for topical use on dry or flaky skin. Overall, its long history of use and substantiation by modern research support its inclusion in products designed to treat and prevent skin dryness.
