Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Nettle (Urtica dioica) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for various skin conditions, including dry and flaky skin. Folk remedies and traditional herbalists have commonly recommended nettle preparations—such as teas, topical washes, or creams—for their purported anti-inflammatory and nourishing properties. Nettle is rich in vitamins (notably A, C, and K), minerals (such as silica and zinc), and phenolic compounds, all of which are believed to contribute to skin health and hydration. While these traditional uses are well documented, scientific evidence specifically supporting nettle's efficacy for dry or flaky skin is limited. Much of the modern research on nettle focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antihistamine effects, which may theoretically benefit skin health but have not been conclusively demonstrated for dry or flaky skin in rigorous clinical trials. As such, while nettle remains popular in traditional skincare remedies, its use for this particular condition is primarily justified by historical precedent rather than robust scientific validation.
