Evidence supporting the use of: Phlebodium decumanum
For the health condition: Skin (dry and/or flaky)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Phlebodium decumanum, also known as Calaguala or “kalawalla,” is a fern traditionally used in Central and South American medicine. Its extracts contain a variety of polyphenols, saponins, and other antioxidants. The scientific evidence for its use in skin health, particularly for dry or flaky skin, is limited but not absent. Most of the available research focuses on its close relative, Polypodium leucotomos, which is better studied for skin benefits such as photoprotection and anti-inflammatory effects. However, several studies and reviews mention Phlebodium decumanum extracts as having immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, which may indirectly benefit skin barrier function and hydration.
A few small clinical and preclinical studies suggest that Phlebodium decumanum may help with skin conditions characterized by dryness and flakiness, such as atopic dermatitis or psoriasis, possibly due to its ability to modulate immune responses and reduce inflammation. However, these studies are limited in number and often have methodological weaknesses. Systematic reviews and authoritative monographs highlight the lack of robust, large-scale, controlled clinical trials specifically addressing dry or flaky skin.
In summary, while there is some preliminary scientific evidence suggesting a potential benefit of Phlebodium decumanum for skin health, including dryness or flakiness, the evidence is weak and indirect. More rigorous research is needed to confirm its efficacy for this specific indication.
