Evidence supporting the use of: Rubus
For the health condition: Skin (dry and/or flaky)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Rubus species (such as blackberries and raspberries) have a history of traditional use in folk medicine for various conditions, including skin ailments. In some traditional medicine systems, topical applications or washes made from Rubus leaves or fruits have been used to soothe dry, irritated, or flaky skin. The rationale often cited is the presence of tannins, flavonoids, and vitamins (notably vitamin C), which are thought to have astringent, antioxidant, and mild anti-inflammatory properties. However, scientific validation for these specific uses is limited. There are no robust clinical studies directly supporting the efficacy of Rubus preparations in the treatment or support of dry or flaky skin in humans. Most evidence is anecdotal or based on historical ethnobotanical records rather than controlled research. While laboratory studies confirm that Rubus species contain antioxidants and other potentially beneficial phytochemicals, the translation of these effects to topical skin health, specifically for dryness or flakiness, remains unproven. As such, the use of Rubus for this purpose is primarily rooted in tradition, with a low level of supporting evidence.
