Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

10-Undecenoic acid, also known as undecylenic acid, is a fatty acid derived from castor oil. Its use in the treatment and support of skin infections, particularly fungal infections such as tinea pedis (athlete’s foot), is supported by scientific evidence, though the quality and extent of this evidence are moderate. Undecylenic acid has demonstrated antifungal activity in vitro, primarily against dermatophytes, the fungi responsible for common superficial skin infections. It works by disrupting fungal cell membranes, thereby inhibiting fungal growth and proliferation.

Undecylenic acid is an FDA-approved active ingredient in over-the-counter topical antifungal products. Clinical studies are limited but generally show that it can be effective in reducing symptoms and clinical manifestations of fungal skin infections, especially when used as a component of combination therapies. Its efficacy is generally considered lower than imidazole or allylamine-based antifungals, but it remains a viable option, particularly for mild infections or in those seeking alternative treatments.

Evidence for its antibacterial activity or effectiveness for non-fungal skin infections is lacking. Overall, the scientific support for undecylenic acid in the management of fungal skin infections is real but not robust, with a rating of 2 out of 5 for evidence strength, based on the predominance of in vitro studies, historical use, and a limited number of clinical trials.
