3-Phenyllactic acid is a naturally occurring organic acid produced by certain lactic acid bacteria and is found in fermented foods and honey. Its use for supporting or treating skin infections is justified by emerging scientific evidence, rather than traditional practice. Several studies have demonstrated that 3-phenyllactic acid exhibits broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, including efficacy against pathogens implicated in skin infections such as Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. For example, research published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology and Frontiers in Microbiology has shown that this compound can inhibit the growth of various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as some fungi.
Its antimicrobial mechanism is believed to involve disruption of microbial cell membranes and inhibition of biofilm formation, both relevant to skin infection management. However, most of the evidence comes from in vitro (laboratory) studies rather than clinical trials in humans. There is currently limited data on its efficacy or safety when applied topically in humans for skin infections. Thus, while there is scientific rationale and preliminary laboratory support for its antimicrobial activity, clinical validation is lacking, and the strength of evidence remains moderate (rated 2 out of 5).
