Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Abuta (Cissampelos pareira), a plant used in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and South American folk medicine, has been employed for various ailments, including skin infections. Historical records and ethnobotanical surveys indicate its use as a topical remedy for wounds, ulcers, and skin infections, based largely on its perceived antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. However, direct scientific studies specifically examining the efficacy of Abuta for treating skin infections in humans are scarce. The plant contains alkaloids and other phytochemicals with demonstrated antimicrobial activity in vitro, but clinical validation for treating skin infections is lacking. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition and some preclinical evidence, the overall quality and quantity of scientific support are limited, and it is not widely recognized in modern evidence-based dermatological practice.
