Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Alchornea cordifolia, commonly known as African Christmas bush, has a long history of use in traditional African medicine, particularly for the treatment of skin infections and wounds. Ethnobotanical surveys across West and Central Africa document its use for various skin conditions, including ulcers, eczema, and infected wounds. The leaves are typically crushed or made into poultices and applied topically to the affected area. While the traditional use is well established, some scientific studies provide preliminary support: in vitro research has shown that extracts from Alchornea cordifolia possess antibacterial and antifungal properties against skin pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. However, these studies are mostly laboratory-based and do not extend to robust clinical trials in humans. There is a lack of large-scale, controlled human studies confirming efficacy for skin infections. Thus, while the traditional use is strong and there is some laboratory evidence suggesting antimicrobial activity, clinical validation remains limited, justifying a moderate evidence rating.
