Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Artepillin C is a major bioactive compound found in Brazilian green propolis. Scientific studies have investigated its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, which are relevant to skin health and infection control. In vitro research demonstrates that Artepillin C exhibits inhibitory effects against several pathogenic bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus and Propionibacterium acnes, both of which are implicated in common skin infections and acne. For example, a study published in the journal Phytotherapy Research (2005) showed that Artepillin C contributed to the antibacterial activity of green propolis extracts against Gram-positive bacteria. Additionally, Artepillin C’s anti-inflammatory actions may help reduce skin inflammation associated with infections or irritations. However, most evidence comes from laboratory (cell culture) or animal studies; robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. There are also no major guidelines or consensus statements supporting its use for skin infections in a clinical setting. Therefore, while the compound shows promise based on preliminary scientific data, the evidence is limited and does not yet reach a high level of clinical validation.
