Evidence supporting the use of: Asam gelugor
For the health condition: Skin (infections)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Asam gelugor (Garcinia atroviridis) has been traditionally used in Southeast Asian folk medicine for various health conditions, including skin infections. Ethnobotanical records from Malaysia and neighboring countries document the use of dried fruit slices, decoctions, or pastes applied topically to the skin to address issues such as rashes, wounds, and minor infections. The rationale behind its use is often attributed to the fruit’s sourness and perceived “cleansing” properties, rather than direct antimicrobial action.
There is, however, limited scientific research specifically investigating Asam gelugor’s efficacy against skin infections. Some laboratory studies have identified the presence of organic acids (such as hydroxycitric acid) and antioxidant compounds in the fruit, but robust clinical or pharmacological data confirming its antibacterial or antifungal action on skin pathogens are lacking. Thus, while there is a basis in traditional practice, the direct scientific validation for this specific use remains weak. The evidence rating is moderate for traditional use, but low for scientific support.
