Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bergenia, particularly Bergenia ciliata, has a well-documented history of use in traditional medicine systems in South Asia, including Ayurveda and folk medicine. The leaves and rhizomes are commonly applied topically for treating various skin ailments and infections. Ethnobotanical records mention its use for wounds, cuts, boils, and skin inflammations, attributing its benefits to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. However, while in vitro studies have identified the presence of bioactive compounds such as bergenin, catechin, and arbutin—some of which demonstrate antimicrobial activity—there is limited direct clinical or robust preclinical evidence to confirm its efficacy specifically for skin infections in humans. Most of the support for its use comes from traditional practices and a few laboratory studies showing inhibition of certain bacteria and fungi. As a result, Bergenia’s application in skin infections primarily remains in the domain of traditional medicine, with scientific validation currently insufficient and largely limited to preliminary data. More rigorous clinical studies are required to substantiate these traditional claims and determine safe and effective usage.
