Evidence supporting the use of: Bisabolene
For the health condition: Skin (infections)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bisabolene is a naturally occurring sesquiterpene found in various plants, including chamomile and certain essential oils. Its use for supporting or treating skin infections has some scientific basis, albeit limited. Preclinical studies have reported that bisabolene and its derivatives exhibit antimicrobial activity against a variety of pathogens, including bacteria and fungi implicated in skin infections. For instance, research published in peer-reviewed journals has demonstrated that bisabolene can inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans in vitro. These properties are believed to contribute to the traditional use of bisabolene-rich plant extracts, such as German chamomile oil, in folk remedies for minor skin irritations and wounds.
However, direct clinical studies evaluating bisabolene itself as a treatment for human skin infections are lacking. The majority of evidence comes from laboratory studies or from research on essential oils containing bisabolene as one of several active constituents. Therefore, while there is some scientific evidence supporting the antimicrobial potential of bisabolene, its efficacy and safety for treating skin infections in humans have not been firmly established. As such, bisabolene’s use for this purpose is supported by early-stage scientific findings, but stronger clinical validation is needed.
